4 Tips for Taking Your Boat Out of a Portable Shelter
As spring arrives and temperatures begin to warm up, you may consider taking that boat out of storage. If you winterized your boat before placing it inside your portable garage for the last few months, it should be in good condition, with little to no damage and repairs needed. Yet, itís never a good idea to simply take the boat out and to the lake. Rather, make sure to go through these steps beforehand:
1. Clean off your boat
Dust and dirt accumulate on your boat as itís in storage. So, as a first step, wash off any film, and then apply a coat of wax, which acts as a protective barrier against UV rays once your craftís in the water.
However, this isnít all there is to do. Additionally, check for superficial scratches and gouges, and then vacuum out the inside.
2. Do Basic Maintenance
While you might have prepared your boat to last the winter, the cold weather can still affect the vehicle, even when itís kept inside a portable garage.
As you go about basic seasonal maintenance, first do the following:
- Add new spark plugs
- Change the oil
- Check and change other fluid levels, including power steering and coolant
- Lubricate all moving parts
- Reconnect your fuel lines
- Inspect for leaks
- Check the battery for a charge
- Inspect the propeller for damage or misalignment
- Check the belts for wear and hoses for damage
- Make sure all fittings and clamps are secure
- Make sure the engine and fuel systems are functioning correctly
3. Check the Electrical System
Did you store your boat near the water? Even when itís kept inside a portable garage, thereís still a chance the salty air could have corroded components. So, in the process of doing basic maintenance, check for corrosion. If you spot any, scrape it off, or replace any old, corroded-beyond-use components.
4. Equip Your Boat with the Proper Safety Gear
As the last step before you head out to the water, make sure your boat has enough safety gear inside. Make sure, at a basic level, your boat has life vests for all participants, a fire extinguisher, and a first aid kit.
