Getting Your Carport Ready for Winter
Canopy Carports are a great way to keep vehicles protected from the elements, especially during the harsh winter months.
Despite the name, mobile carports can protect more than just cars. Automobiles, pick-up trucks, RV's, trailers, campers, boats, lawn and farm equipment are all things that can be protected by a reliable portable carport.
Carport kits come in a variety of sizes. Some carports need less winter preparation than others. It's important to take steps to get your carport ready for winter and to understand the materials of the carport. This will ensure that that your vehicle and/or equipment is properly protected from the elements.
Many canopy carports feature galvanized steel. Carports with galvanized steel should last longer over time. This is because galvanized steel has been coated for rust and corrosion resistance. Check to see if your carport is made of galvanized steel or powder-coated steel. A carport with powder-coated steel can offer solid protection for a full winter season. It just may not have the long-term protection power than that of a carport with galvanized steel.
If you do have a carport with powder-coated steel, you may want to use it on a seasonal basis, perhaps just using it in the winter (for something like farm equipment or a rear-wheel drive sports car). It you prepare this type of carport for the winter, it might be beneficial to store the portable carport during the milder months of the year.
The galvanized steel carport gives you better year-round protection against the elements simply because it is built to last longer. This type of carport might be a great protection choice for a vehicle that you will use throughout the year but still want to be able to shelter during rough patches of weather.
If you have a carport with a polyethylene cover, check the polyethylene and the condition of the cover. The lifespan of the cover is likely going to shorter than that of the steel. The good news is that you should be able to purchase a reliable polyethylene cover replacement and still be able to maximize the efficiency of your carport.
