How Should You Store Your Motorcycle in Summer?

motorcycle storageWinterization is key to getting your motorcycle started for the season. Yet, throughout spring and summer, it's crucial that you keep up maintenance and develop a storage solution to keep your vehicle out of the sun and away from rain. In the process, consider these suggestions:

1. Keep It Lubricated

Dry and hot conditions cause compounds inside your oil to evaporate and release chemicals. Not only does your bike have less oil, but the substances released could damage the interior. As a general measure, check your bike's oil and other fluids regularly, and have them changed every 5,000 miles, if not sooner in the warmer weather.

2. Keep It in a Cool, Dry Place

It's no secret that moisture rusts metal components, and UV rays crack rubber and fade paint jobs. When you want your bike to last, keep it inside a portable shelter, rather than leaving it outdoors, where it's exposed to the elements. Don't have one yet? Find a small portable motorcycle garage that won't take up much room on your property through Shelters of America.

3. Check the Exhaust System

As you ride, debris and dirt might get stuck in your motorcycle's exhaust system. So, periodically, check the head pipes and mufflers to remove any buildup and to inspect for cracks and other damage.

4. Check the Tires

While colder temperatures can cause the pressure to run low, warmer weather often has the opposite effect. Make sure yours aren't too high this time of year - otherwise, you could experience a blow out the next time you go for a ride.

As well, repeat usage could result in rot or worn treads, so if you notice either of these during an inspection, have a plan to replace your tires.

5. Check the Battery

Motorcycle batteries are only good for about two years. Beyond this, the battery might not hold a consistent charge, which increases your chances of getting stranded on the side of the road. So you remain safe, check its charge from time to time, and if it's past the two-year mark, have it replaced.
