9 Tips for Winterizing Your Motorcycle Before Placing It in Storage

motorcycle storageFor those considering a seasonal storage solution, one step is absolutely key – and it’s not just selecting a shelter.

Winterizing a vehicle makes or breaks how well it operates in spring. With motorcycles, forgetting this step may result in a dead battery, poorly lubed parts, lopsided tires, and rust spots. So, rather than just pick out a shelter of the right size, make sure to follow these steps first:

  1. Wash and Wax the Surface – Doing so removes debris, first and foremost, and then protects it from corrosion.
  2. Change the Oil and Filter – It’s best to remove the oil now, rather than wait still spring. You don’t want to start up a vehicle, only to find it has gummy, grimy lubrication.
  3. Lubricate Moving Parts – But the above isn’t to say you should eschew lube completely. Rather, think about the parts that move and get your bike on the road. Make sure to add lubrication to any cables, controls, cylinders, and fork surfaces.
  4. Add a Fuel Stabilizer – To have an empty tank or leave it full? When you’re worried about moisture buildup, neither seems like an ideal option, until you add fuel stabilizer. This keeps the tank full and assists in preventing moisture accumulation
  5. Add a Battery Monitor – Also known as a tender, this device keeps your battery charged sufficiently, avoiding both discharges and overcharges while your bike’s in storage.
  6. Consider the Tires – Just leaning the bike somewhere eventually affects your tires. It’s recommended to prop up the vehicle with a stand to prevent flat spots from forming, and to avoid moisture, keep a carpet or plywood, instead of grass, below.
  7. Watch Your Fluids – Make sure your bike has enough antifreeze.
  8. Oil the Muffler and Drain Holes – Give certain parts with the greatest propensity to rust more lubrication. To do this, some experts recommend oiling the muffler and drain holes beforehand.
  9. Pick the Right Location – Even though your bike’s getting stored inside a portable motorcycle garage, you want to keep it in the right spot. So, find a location away from windows and direct sunlight and on flat ground where water won’t pool.

In the process of getting your bike ready for seasonal storage, find a portable garage through Shelters of America. Select from a range of sizes before ordering one today.
