With summer in the rearview mirror, now is the time to begin getting your RV ready for winter storage. There are several critical steps that you should take so that your vehicle will be in good condition and ready for your next excursion in the spring or summer.

Clean the RV Inside and Out

Start by removing any food and trash from the RV and giving the interior a thorough cleaning. Don’t leave anything behind that might attract rodents or insects or that might produce an odor if it sits in storage for months. Clean the outside of the RV, too.

Seal Any Entry Points

While you’re going through the cleaning process, look for any signs of damage, such as gaps or cracks. Those are potential entry points for rodents. Seal or caulk those areas or have a professional do it for you.

Drain the Plumbing System

If your RV has any water in the plumbing system while it’s in storage, the water can freeze. That can result in major damage and expensive repair bills.

Read the owner’s manual to find out how to drain your RV’s water system. The process typically involves draining the water and waste tanks and pipes and then using non-toxic RV antifreeze. Figure out if you can do it yourself or if you should hire a professional.

Use Fuel Stabilizer

Oxidation can cause gummy deposits to form. Those deposits can damage your RV’s engine. You can prevent that by adding a fuel stabilizer, filling the gas tank, starting the engine and generator, and letting them run for the amount of time recommended in the fuel stabilizer’s directions. You should also change the oil and oil filter in the engine and generator.

Remove the Batteries

Disconnect the batteries before you put your RV into winter storage. Store them in a cool, dry place and check them every four to six weeks during the winter. Recharge them if necessary so they won’t freeze.

Store Your RV in a Safe Place

If you can’t keep your RV in a garage over the winter, a portable shelter is a good alternative. You can set up a storage building on your property and put your RV in a place where it will be protected and where you’ll be able to check on it during the winter.

Shelters of America sells portable storage buildings in a wide range of sizes and heights. We even offer shelters that are large enough to house an RV. A storage building can protect your RV from rain, snow, sleet, hail, wind, and animals. Order a shelter now so your RV will have the protection it needs this winter.
